Version 1: What Animal is Perfect for
You?

We all dream
of a pet to call our own,
Some creature
to take refuge in our home,
Having an
animal companion to love is what we desire,
But choosing a
pet that connects is hard to acquire.
A pet is
something we must connect, a bond so true,
So what animal
is a perfect for you?
First, there’s
the dog, energetic, loving and sweet,
They are the
perfect companion for a family treat,
Faithful,
loyal and will stay with you until the end,
It’s no wonder
these canines are known as “Man’s Best Friend”.
Then there’s
the cat with its musical purr,
It rubs
against your leg with its soft, smooth fur,
Its large,
cute eyes will make you go smitten,
You’ll
definitely want to cuddle with an adorable little kitten.
Parrots are
beautiful birds, which knows how to talk,
They amuse you
with their unique chirps and songful squawks,
Their
beautiful, vivid feathers is something you admire,
Yet, the
saltine crackers are something they desire.
A goldfish,
which doesn’t do much,
Isn’t a pet
you can pet or touch,
It loves to
swim around in a large, watery tank,
Showing off its
sparkling orange scales on its flank.
Hamsters and
Guinea Pigs feel like cotton balls,
They can fit
in your hands, and are quite small,
Stuffed in its
pouches will be treats,
It squeaks
happily when its given food to eat.
The ferret
loves to scamper across the ground,
It sniffs
everything, meeping all around,
Whenever it
has energy to spare,
It plays about
without a care.
Bunnies are adorable,
small tuffs
Of brown,
black, grey or white fluff,
They merrily
hop through the lawn,
Eating veggies
from dusk till dawn.
Tarantulas
Snakes,
Turtles and Frogs are cool critters to get,
They’re quite
easy to handle, nothing to fret,
Despite how
slow, quick or jumpy these creatures can be,
They enjoy
resting in their cages, in peace and tranquility.
Finally, the
tarantula may look scary,
But they’re
calm insects that are cute and hairy,
It’s delicate
body and eight legs softly treading,
Over her
shimmering, silky webbing.
We all dream
of a pet to call our own,
Some creature
to take refuge in our home,
A pet that
will cheer us up and lick the salty tears away,
An animal that
will brighten our darkest days.
A pet that
fills our lives with undying joy and love so true,
So what animal
is a perfect for you?

Version 2: Pet Peeve

We all dream
of a pet to call our own,
Some creature
to take refuge in out home,
But when you
walk into a shelter, all too soon you will find
Yourself
saying, “I must be out of my mind!”
First, there’s
the dog, sweet, loving and full of cuddles,
But if you
don’t take him out, you’ll be stepping in his puddles,
He digs up
your yard and barks while you try to sleep,
He lies around
in a big, smelly heap.
Then there’s
the cat with her musical purr,
Yet she sheds
no less than three tons of fur,
Your new
curtains, fabric and books are torn to shreds,
She stakes
claims to every chair, carpet and bed.
The parrot is
a beautiful bird who knows how to talk,
But he keeps
you up all night with his annoying squawks,
There’s no way
you’ll catch him if he gets free,
And you’re
feeding him almost constantly.
A goldfish,
which doesn’t do much,
She dies
almost instantly at any touch,
You’re making
daily trips to the fish store,
To find one to
replace the one from before.
Hamsters,
guinea pigs and ferrets may look cute,
But these
cuddly cotton balls are quite a brute,
They nibble,
bite and cause a large mess,
Keeping their
cages maintained causes a lot of stress.
Bunnies are
adorable, always wiggling their nose,
But their
uncontrollable breeding habit easily shows,
Keeping them
contained is a must,
They shyly hop
away from those they doesn’t trust.
Then there are
Snakes, as cool as they may be,
Is a serpent
you don’t want wandering free,
Turtles and
Frogs aren’t something you should fret,
But not caring
for them will be something you’ll regret.
Finally,
tarantulas may look scary,
But they’re
calm insects that are cute and hairy,
But if you
loose this insect’s sight,
A sickening
squish will get you to scream in fright.
Sure a pet may
sound like a lot of fun,
But be
forewarned—you’re really in for one!
Be prepared
for a lot of noises, headaches and stress,
And make sure
you’re all set for a big mess!

These are two different poem versions, about having a pet, for my Poetry Object Project. The first poem version is about the benefits, positives and great outcomes of having a pet (the joys, excitement and fun of having a pet); while the second version is the downside and negatives of obtaining a pet (emphasizes more on the handwork and responsibility in having a pet).
